To follow up our previous post about the insane welder salaries in todays market, I thought I’d share a recent article published by Yahoo Finance that follows Justin Friend, a 24 year old welder in Texas who made $130,000 in 2013 and more than $140,000 in 2014.
After completing the welding training program at Texas State Technical College he soon after found a job at a plant that makes subsea oil production equipment. The job has been good to him. He typically works around 70-80 hours a week. His base rate is $25/hr but because he works so many hours he gets overtime pay and holiday pay. His pay is doubled to $50/hr on Sundays and triples to $75/hr on holidays.
At only 24 years old he’s already bought himself a $53,000 pickup truck. In his free time dabbles in engineering and building jet engines. One of which he strapped to a golf cart!
His only complaint is the long hours, but the money makes up for it. He’s young and willing to work hard. His current focus is to build up his savings account.
